Bernie Sanders speaks to crowd in Lawrence

Bernie Sanders spoke to a crowd of 4000 people spoke at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds in Lawrence for the upcoming Kansas caucuses. Sanders has been know gaining the attention of the youth.

“I have been to political rallies before and they were definitely not the type of people that were at Bernie’s rally which was kind of interesting,” Chris Gernon, junior, said.  “I thought the main differences were definitely like the majority were young people who were interesting in his policies which is pretty exciting for this election because it is a pivotal election for the future.”

The rally drew thousands of people from all over the state and caused people to have to wait in line for hours.

“This was my first political rally, so I did not really know what to expect. It definitely taught me how different campaign budgets have a great influence on how comfortable a rally might be. Since Bernie does not have the greatest budget you could see that the rally could have been better,” Saul Cervantes, senior, said. “Overall, I enjoyed his explanation on certain issues and seeing the people react to what he had to say. It was hype.”

Sanders spoke about many of the key issues he has mentioned throughout his campaign such as the corrupt campaign finance system and a better redistribution of wealth in America.

When he asked if the crowd knew the average campaign contribution, and a lot of people yelled ‘27 dollars’ and he started laughing and said ‘that’s right, 27 bucks,’” and he started laughing and said ‘that’s right, 27 bucks,’” Barrett Robertson, senior, said.

Many first time voters were in attendance for the event. This allowed them to get a first hand look of politics in the United States of America.
“I stood in line for like four hours and it was definitely worth the wait to hear him speak. When I first got there I was thinking standing this long will not be worth it, but then he gets on and it is just really exciting,” Gernon said.
