Why I Stand with Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood has been in the news quite a bit lately, with almost everyone having their own opinion on it one way or another. With congress recently voting to defund the organization, leaves many people questioning the reasons for doing so.

One of the main arguments against Planned Parenthood is over abortion. Videos were released of Planned Parenthood supposebly selling fetal tissue for profit, but those were proven to be false. There are varying numbers between the supporters and challenges of Planned Parenthood, but according to Washington Post’s Michelle Lee Hee Yee between 15 to 37 percent of the organization’s revenue comes from abortion services. While many challengers oppose the idea of abortion, ultimately it should be the woman’s decision to make. The services of Planned Parenthood allow a safe way for a woman to go through this procedure, and eliminating the organization does not prevent abortion but only makes the field much more dangerous for the woman.

The organization is also not just for abortion services. Some argue the organization should lose its funding from the government because of the video (which were proven false), even though the funding they receive does not even go to abortion services. The non-profit mostly uses the funding for Medicaid payments for treating low income individuals according to Gail Collins from the New York Times. Planned Parenthood provides health services for women, such as cancer screenings. They provide many of these services for women in poor areas with no health insurance. The organization also tests and helps to treat STDs and helps to educate safe sex.

While many may not agree with some of the services which Planned Parenthood provides, the organization still administers many services for people all over the United States. Without the government funding from Planned Parenthood, there are not enough provides to take care of the millions of people Planned Parenthood serves.
