Tennis coach Duane Pomeroy is looking to send seniors Christian Sink and Victor Arriaga to the State matches as a doubles pair.
Sink and Arriaga play doubles matches as each other’s partners. Arriaga and Sink are partnering for the first time this year, due to Sink’s previous partner graduating last year. Pomeroy believes that the two are dedicated to the sport.
“Christian and Victor just see things,” Pomeroy said. “They’ve been on varsity all four years. They play year-round. Sometimes on nice, winter days, they’ll go running. They’re good friends, too.”
Arriaga and Sink both take private lessons when they can to improve their technique during matches.
“Victor and I both take private lessons,” Sink said. “We’ve learned a lot of different drills to get better at hitting quicker balls.”
One crucial aspect of playing doubles is keeping your partner motivated, Arriaga said.
“We work together and make sure the other doesn’t get in their head,” Arriaga said. “We always try to cover for each other’s weak points.”
Sink believes that good communication during matches helps him and Arriaga play their best.
“Communication is really important when you play doubles,” Sink said. “When you communicate, you make sure that you and your partner are on the same page, which helps you come up with plays to make against the other team.”
The pair’s main strategy to qualify for state is to get the best seeding possible in the regional bracket.
“Christian and I definitely plan to do our best to go to state,” Arriaga said. “Part of our plan is to place high at every meet and make sure we win all the right matches that’ll give us the best seeding in the regional bracket.”
Pomeroy thinks that the pair has a good chance at qualifying this year.
“Christian qualified for state last year, and Victor is a talented player as well,” Pomeory said. “I think they have a great chance of being a doubles pair that qualifies.”
