Trending Tuesday: Chokers

Another vintage throwback trend is making a comeback this year. Within the past month, choker necklaces are popping up more frequently in the halls of Troy. Plain black chokers are seen the most often, occasionally featuring a charm or bead. Choker lovers are also featuring red velvet or gold chains. Some students, however, prefer to be creative with their choice of materials for the trending necklaces.

“I made the choker I’m wearing in this picture out of a shoelace from a boot,” Emily Goodrow, senior, said. “No one has even noticed that it is a shoelace, so it’s a great way to save money. I’ll definitely be using DIY materials in the future.”

As well as being a money saver, creating accessories is a fun way to put personal style into trends, especially one that has been prominent as long as chokers have. Chokers were first made popular by royalty in the late 1800s, and then reappeared in the 1990s as part of the grunge style trend.

“I think chokers are really cool and fun to wear. They are a really refreshing change from the typical necklace,” Goodrow said. “I love this vintage trend as well as others such as high waisted jeans and Adidas shoes.”
