The Classic Man: Fashion for the short man

An often neglected minority of men is the section of society which is short. Beyond the obvious challenge of reaching top shelves and dancing with tall women, looking good as a short man brings additional difficulty. But with a few simple tricks and tips up one’s sleeve, finding clothes and dressing well is hardly an ordeal.

The first weapon in a short man’s arsenal is proper measurements. Once a man knows how clothes should vaguely fit. It makes picking out new wardrobes much easier. Fit is also very important for short men, because the ill effects of poorly-fit clothes are amplified on small frames. If a short man wears baggy clothing he is likely to appear to be drowning in folds of wool and cotton, it isn’t a good look.

Another small, but sneaky way to make shortness less noticeable, is in color choice and combination. A cardinal rule of fashion is that black and other dark colors is thinning, it also gives the illusion of tallness. The other trick is to wear monochromatic (same color) or analogous (closely related colors) clothes. Wearing these color schemes allow outfits to flow more easily from top to bottom, again giving the illusion of tallness. Wearing heavily contrasting colors breaks the segments of the body up, and accentuates stuntedness.

Another problem with being short, especially if the short man is younger, is that shortness often also brings with it a look of immaturity. Which is a good reason for dressing up, and especially dressing maturely, in classic styles, and less in trendy or “younger” styles. It’s best to keep it classy, and keep it timeless.
