With a standing of 9-3 and only losing to Lawrence in overtime, Topeka West and Wichita-Southeast, the Topeka High boys soccer team had a complete turn around from last season. Their team captain and goalkeeper, a varsity player, Billy Lutz, became captain last year as only a sophomore.
With this season going so well, Lutz has begun looking into talking to colleges about possible offers his senior year,
“My top school would probably be Clemson, so, but keeping my options open, so.”
Antonio Aguirre, new to the Topeka High team this season, felt solid about Lutz’s leadership.
“I think Billy has been a big role on this year’s team as a captain, showing it on and off the field as much as he possibly can,” Senior Antonio Aguirre said. “He’s more than just a captain, he’s a leader of this team win or lose. He is always positive about the team.”
In addition, this season Lutz is ranked 5th in the state in saves with an average of 9.2 saves per game.
According to senior Jaime Alvarado, the other captain of the soccer team,
“The leadership from the captains have made a big difference and the desire to prove something with the team we have this year.”
Lutz responded similarly about the good team chemistry and morale brought with the now nine games long win streak, bringing up senior Ian Martinez, the current top scorer also ranking 5th in the state for scoring 16 goals and 37 points this season.
“We got a decent team, so we’re gonna see if we can take it all the way,” Lutz added.
When the team is as solid as can be and the chemistry and morale is high, the only thing Lutz said the team really needed to work on is grades.
“Gotta work on grades, keeping our grades up, going to class. But other than that, moving the ball, just working as a team” Lutz said.
With 4 games left in the season, including a rematch against Topeka West, the boys soccer team have high hopes for placing at state.
