Broken fire alarms cause problems during fire drill

Fifth hour Thursday December 3, the school had its scheduled monthly fire drill  by required Kansas State Fire Marshal (KSFM). But in some classrooms and in the hallway, the warning system was not operating properly.

“We didn’t hear or see anything in my classroom, a staff member came in and told us what was going on,” Brie Derr, senior, said.

When a fire alarm is operating properly after the emergency alarm switch is triggered all of the  notification lights are supposed to activate and alert everyone in the building to evacuate. Students and staff members are reporting that lights on the third floor went off but they had no sound.  Only half of the second floor had lights and sound. The system on the first floor seemed to be working fine.

“Nothing happened in my class. We just went on as normal. I didn’t even know one happened until after class,” Belen Calva-Morales, senior, said. “I was kind of shocked that we didn’t do anything about it.”
